It is a natural volcanic amphitheatre, world-heritage listed, located in the very centre Reunion Island. It was carved by the erosion of the now extinct volcano named Piton des Neiges. Flying over it, you can see the jungle and a few isolated houses… it’s hard to believe that anyone could actually live there… and yet there are 700 inhabitants in the heart of this tropical wilderness, cut off from the world and outside of time. There is not a single road to get there, only hiking paths and the endless buzz of helicopters. We encountered the people who live there and who embody the soul of this unique place.
