Exploring artisanal fishing in Mayotte. The French overseas department located in the Mozambique Channel has one of the largest lagoons in the world and is surrounded by a double coral reef, a very rare geological formation.  The lagoon is home for over 750 species of tropical fish. This reef’s rich biodiversity offers plentiful fishing ground for Mayotte’s fishermen who carry on ancestral skills in their crafted wooden pirogues and nets when the tide is low, keeping up with the traditional methods used by their ancestors.

A report that will transport you into the heart of one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. 50 shades of turquoise guaranteed!

700 fishermen still use these traditional wooden boats without motors and that are made skillfully by master craftsmen who perpetuate an exceptional know-how.
